Heavenbound!

Richard Herold Kitchens

 February 28, 2009

Funeral will be in Childress, Tx  at 10 am Wednesday at the
Childress Church of Christ

Written by Steve Rogers...
(his words were perfect!; some of you couldn't complete the link to "Just a Good Man" - so I just copied it and printed it in this post!

Richard Kitchens, my father-in-law is near death. He has a rare form of bone cancer that in the last few weeks attacked his kidneys, who are now so damaged they are shutting down causing us all to face the mortality of a loved one. A good man is about to leave us.

I feel fortunate, for 12 years Kitchens has been a part of my life, my family. Kitchens was, by all accounts a good business man. A renaissance man of sort, he knew a lot about a lot of different things, he could repair or build just about anything he wanted and do your taxes. He was a talented high school athlete and was the official weather station for Childress, TX, supplying every day weather data to the NWS.

He loves athletics, he was the radio voice of the Childress Bobcats for years. I got to listen to him call a high school basketball game one evening, shortly after Ann and I were married. After listening to the game for a few minutes in the car we went into the gym, sitting across the floor I could watch him perched atop the bleachers calling the game. I did not have to hear his voice, I could see the methodical enthusiasm in his face and his body language. He was good, he loved that job.

He had a kind and giving heart, ask anyone connected with ‘Meals on Wheels”.

He was the master of three, count them three TV’s. Two TV’s each featuring a different sporting event and one constantly monitoring the Weather Channel. There was always a remote handy during bowl games and nights heavy with sports activity, especially college games.

The only weakness I saw in the man was a propensity for exercise gadgetry. He had tread mills, stair steps, things you roll out in front of you promising to give you Charles Atlas Ab’s, he had it all. I think Kitchens was a sucker for a good infomercial.

Kitchens loves his family. And he was kind enough to just drag me and my sons into the mix-no questions asked. I am grateful.

He told Ann, on a drive back to Childress a couple of years ago about a problem he had with his business, White’s, the store he owned in Childress. Ann just thought he was talking or maybe needed to confess a weakness to her. But Kitchens knew I was struggling professionally at the time. I think he just wanted her to know every man stumbles sometimes, he was just adding perspective to our life.

He is the source of the funniest car story I have. I love to share it but it is much more funny in person.

I wish we’d had more time, he and I. There are questions I should have asked, “What was your greatest moment on the basketball court?” What do you want to be when you grow up?” He was a really, really good man. He is loved, he will be missed. God bless you sir.

FYI Class of 1982

Hey! Classmates of 1982... just found out one of our own is fighting a huge battle with ovarian cancer. Crystal Wright
Miller. She needs our prayers and support... here's a link for more info.    She's someone that I love dearly - that "Zany-Wacky Woman" - she's staying so positive! Our
senior year in high school, we were in the drama production of "Harvey"  - she was Veta Louise and I was Myrtle Mae - hey - we made All-star cast - a winning duo - we were!  Ah, the memories!  What is it with "childhood" friends... they are the best!  You can make new
friends, but the old ones are worth gold!  Maybe because they know things that no one would ever remember or believe, ha!  Have a great weekend!  HUG the ones you love!

Fotos for Friday with Grace!

With all the sadness around our family, a baby's smile can help SO MUCH!  Baby Grace has been our highlight this week!  She has had a smile for everyone!  She's such a sweetie!  So here's my "Fotos for Friday" starring Grace!

Family helps beat depression!

My family is such a lift when I'm down! With everything going on with our family and Paw Paw - I threw myself into making a "Paper Sack Family Scrapbook"! People (students, teachers friends -) all think I'm crazy to put so much time into my projects... but it's a "therapy" for me. I find positive satisfaction making things... SO! Take a look at this project! Got the idea again from crafty DAWN here (- she is SO good; lots and lots of projects in her treasure box!) Our family took group pictures while Andy was here during the holiday break - so I had these on hand. I used 3 plain brown lunch-size paper bags and lots of colored paper - complimented with black and white designer paper.

What do you think? It is thick... but what scrapbook isn't! This project helped in making me realize that my family is the greatest blessing that life can offer! It worked! My family helped take out my depression! Hope you have a great "Hump Day" - 59 more days of school (17 more school days until spring break)... but who's counting!!

I love my Paw Paw!

This is a "Celebration Post" for a wonderful man. This is my grandfather of 85 and he's ready to go "home". The doctors have called in the family, he is not in pain - he just is ready to say good bye. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma a couple weeks ago; he's down to 13% usage of his renal organs. He's signed his last will & testament - and he has made all of us promise (and signed the legal documents) not to do anything else - it's so hard... LIFE - I'm trying to treasure the smiles he gives me; cherish the hand squeezes that he shares and I respect his wishes. All our family members and friends are coming from many directions to come and say good-bye to this sweet man. Please keep us all in your prayers as we go this last step with him. Thank you so much. I love my Paw Paw! Additional links to read:

Andy's 20 TODAY!

My
oldest is
20 today!
Happy
Birthday
Andy Hayes!
I love you! Hope
you have a great day!
Andy's B-day card - I wanted something different and unique. It's a "SMELL" card too - it smells like birthday cake! hahaha! The scent is added on to the scored line of the card - it looks like clear finger-nail polish! Too funny! You can order some here at this link - if you're interested in "smelly cards"!! This card features a embossed birthday cake that flips back to show a "shaker" insert - the confetti inside the card makes the 20 look like a 30 - he's only 20 today! "Shaker" is the term, because you can shake the card and the confetti inside the clear insert will "shake"!! A very thick card - hope he likes it!

Hey Andy Hayes - check this link out
http://www.myspace.com/childressbrimstone
listen to the music - you'll be amazed - they're good! Let me know what you think!

"Girlie Gifts" this week!

I got the honor of making "Girlie" gifts!!  Last week I made my niece a birthday card Happy B-day "A"; (working hard on Andy Hayes' 20th card - that'll be another post - can you believe it - "20" argh! )
But "Girlie Gifts" are SO FUN!  Aric's little friend will get a new "Girlie Can" and my other niece turning 12 - a "Girlie Squash Book".  Black, hot pink and lime green were the color
scheme - these colors TOTALLY ROCK!
Blogging is fun and is an outlet - I am just like you! My days are full of "to do's", morning till night. Sound familiar? When I do find the time in the day, I love crafting - totally into paper-crafting at the moment (2 years!).  That's why my blogs are often full of the projects that I'm working on.  As a mom to 4 males (2 at-home sons, 1 college son and 1 husband), that time is often limited.  I have been creating art items, cards, doo-das, painting, claying, anything "artsy-fartsy" all my life. Each one different from the last. It is something I truly enjoy.
You could even say it is a passion. Part of that passion has been sharing with others and attempting to teach them - hence my 2nd job of teaching art in the high school and often my clubs and other groups that I'm involved in - it's just who I am.  I am very lucky to be able to live in a
small town and share!  So! Please don't think that I'm a "kiss up" or trying to out-do someone else... I'm giving to give... I make things to give -  it's just me!
I've also made a resolution to give Birthday cards to all of my family and friends; including church family... and I've almost made it through February -- only 10 more months to go (what was I thinking, ha!!)  Have a great FRIDAY!
  TGIF!

***I've gone "Squash Card" crazy!  Hey PC - this one is for Gracie - started it as a demo for the students and finally finished it up with pictures of the sweetest girl in town - will be sending it snail-mail soon!  Love you!

Alex did it!

The "Just 4 Fun Love Run" (5k)
was on Valentine's Day and Alex did it - WITH STYLE
He was so awesome ~ just under
29 minutes - 3.1 miles (and he's only 12 yrs. old!). Alex has been training for a couple of weeks with his DAD- his inspiration. Today was the day!  He even sprinted the last couple of yards. Alex - U R SUPER!

Later in the day, our
family headed over to Oklahoma to celebrate Valentine's - eating at "Applebee's"
it was an excellent choice. Some shopping, watching videos - we returned with bargins and smiles. It was a GREAT!

Creating Valentines!

Here are some of the Valentine crafts that we were able to complete before the big party on Friday th 13th! (How ironic!) Aric is the only one that was lucky enough to have a celebration for Valentine's - so we fixed him up right! We sent "LOVE" water bottles -haha! (Waterbottles with cute little hang tags) - got the idea here from Angie K. Juda. We have used this project OFTEN - and it always brings a "wow" - and they are "easy-peasy" too.
Aric and I also fixed up Candy Bags - featuring a "Heart Butterfly" - used the cutout heart handle to created a butterfly - Aric's idea! Do you remember writing out your class valentines... great memories! LOVE the chocolate! (Love, LOVE the Valentine chocolate  candy 75% off sale the-day-after Valentine's Day - hahaha!)

Every year our church ladies give a "Sweetheart Banquet" for our senior members. This year, I was in charge of decorations! It was a quick job - we had 3 hours to set up and cook  - along with LTC practice. There were about 45 honorees; it all turned out great!  Happy Valentine's Day

Sale-bra-tion Party!

Friday the 13th was celebrated by making some "CUTE" stamping crafts.  The big C-town's "Stampin Up" demonstrator came and guided several of us through a variety of projects. She did a demo on the "Big Shot" (WOW!)  We completed some beautiful things!  Wish you were there!  Next craft time will be at the "Crop Shop" on March 6 ~ it's a "Trade Day" and the first gathering of the "Finish It Friday" gang!  Come join and crop - more info later!

The "Squash" Book!

Revised... Here's a pic of my students creating their own "squash book" in class!  It was a perfect project for Valentine's Day!  Hey - Art Students - you rock!
Here's my attempt of making a "Squash" book... I haven't finished yet ~ but thought I would share.  Got the idea here from DAWN.  She is awesome - the "Hi Stampers!" lady - as my kids call her... watch her videos and you will see why!  The Squash Book is a folded up - accordion style album.  It takes 3-8 1/2 squares of card stock for the base of the book!  I've got two nieces this month that will have birthdays (one will be 12 and the other 15) and I thought these books would be for them and it would be cute to add pictures inside of them growing up... or maybe I should just leave it for them to put their own pictures of choice inside?  Such dilemmas!  These were fun, but took alot of paper.  My general color scheme is red, olive and brown... I've been stuck on these colors since before Christmas...  I'll change schemes one day!  Hug the ones you love!  Have a great week!

Scoliosis

The word scoliosis comes from the Greek word meaning crooked. The spine (back) should look straight up and down when you look at someone from behind. If the spine has a sideways curve, it is called a scoliosis.

Since Junior High age, I have suffered from scoliosis. Was under the care of a specialist through college.  I still have a "hump" if you look down my spine as I bend over.  I will always have scoliosis.

Six years ago, right before my 20th year reunion, I "through out my back" argh!  I was in bed for 3 days - but did recover to make the reunion!   I have had several other  episodes with my lower back, but this weekend was the worst.  Today, I stayed home from school, taking meds and finally took the big step of calling our local chiropractor and I am SO GLAD that I did.

It was meant to be... they had a cancellation and I was able to walk right in!  After a routine examination, I received my first treatment.  OH MY!  It was a very odd sensation -  my body popped and cracked - I saw stars! - learned to put ICE not heat on my back.  I do not have

any bulging disk or anything major like that; my back pain is really not caused by the scoliosis- it's just wear and tear on my back from working on cement floors for so long.  For 16 years, I have taught art in the classroom standing up on cement floors - and now my back is suffering. So I've got to get some orthopedic shoe filler doo-das to help me cushion my back... if you know me  - I own every "Croc" available and only wear crocs - hmmm!  We'll see if the filler thing can fit inside a croc shoe!!  "Changes" - I can change - maybe; hopefully!  Thanks again to my mom who unselfishly gave of herself and time to take and stay with me - yes, I still need "my moma" and glad she is here to help!  I love you MOM!

Cards, Cousins, Cupcakes and Mii's !

This was the MOST beautiful Saturday in February!  (Course it was the only one that we've had this month) 78 degress - wow and NO WIND - double-wow!!  It was gorgeous!
We made cupcakes, the boys played outside - rode bikes; KV ran only 8 miles today (argh!).  I did the laundry, changed sheets and made some get-well cards (while listening
to Eclipse (Twilight Book #3).  Tonight we went to the BIG town of
Lakeview TX (pop. 175?) for "Cousin time" - KV has two sisters and we
were all together with his mom and step-dad.  The kids played the Wii!  Have you played on the Wii?  First, you've got to make a Mii and then you can play the Wii -  I did have to take notes (add this to your vocabulary... along with blog, wiki a
nd text)!  A "Mii" is YOU on the Wii... you make a character that resembles you and he/she is the one that you see on the screen!  The boys had a great time!  It's always great to visit with family.

Tried to create a more "manly" get-well card using an acetate pocket - no frills, glitter - I did emboss the "little pick-up" after coloring with the Prisma markers, but nothing else.  "Heard you could use a "little pick-up" today!" is the saying on the pull-tag card.   Oh - also added texture by cuttlebugg-ing the  card with swirls and the acetate with "Get Well Soon" - what do you think?  Manly - or just "plain" - hmmm!  Or is manly = plain??!? Not a "smile" project yet, gotta work out some details... maybe some glitter or embellishments wouldn't hurt - I'll sleep on it!
Hope you are having a GREAT weekend!  HUG the ones you love!  Enjoy the sunshine!
